UAE Freelance Visa

In order to foster job creation, the UAE now allows its citizens, residents, and non-residents to apply for freelance visa and freelance licence in Dubai, Ajman and other emirates.

Dubai, a leading global investment hub, offers an exceptional opportunity for freelancers to launch their careers. The world of freelancing has expanded significantly in recent years, with businesses increasingly recognizing the value of a flexible, skilled, and accessible workforce.

Freelancer Permit for UAE Residents

If you’re already a resident of Dubai under a spouse’s or parent’s visa, you simply need to acquire a freelancer permit to begin working. This permit is valid for 1 year with the possibility of renewal. Professionals with an employment visa in the UAE can also become freelancers by obtaining it. However, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your sponsor and/or employer is required.

Freelancer Visa for Non-Residents

Non-residents should apply for a freelancer visa, which grants permission to live and work in the UAE as a freelancer. This also involves applying for a residence visa, which is valid for 2 years.

Dubai Talent Pass

The Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority (Dafza), Dubai Culture, and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) have introduced the Dubai Talent Pass. This three-year visa or freelance licence aims to attract and retain international talent in art, media, technology, marketing, culture, education, and consultancy.

Freelance visa holders enjoy numerous advantages, including:

  • The ability to work for multiple companies.
  • The option to provide services at lower prices, increasing affordability.
  • The legal right to live and work in the Emirates, as well as bring family members or dependents (note that sponsoring employees with a freelance visa is not allowed).
  • The opportunity to work as an independent contractor.
  • Access to the free zone’s business center.

Freelancers can also apply for the 5-year Green Visa, designed to promote the growth of the freelance and self-employment industries.

Required documents for Freelance Visa application:

  • Resume/CV
  • Recent photograph
  • Passport and visa copy (valid for at least 8 months)
  • NOC from your UAE sponsor (if applicable)
  • Proof of academic qualifications certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the UAE Consulate in your country of origin (for those applying in the education sector)
  • Portfolio or sample of your work (for those applying in the media sector)
  • Completed application form.

Embarking on a freelancing journey in Dubai can be both exciting and rewarding. With the UAE freelance visa, you have the opportunity to work independently, grow your network, and experience life in a dynamic, global city.
